At first, in art, the sex organs were represented by pictures of them, but as man developed and ideas of morals changes, such representations seemed offensive or crude, and they were therefore gradually modified until the symbols could scarcely be recognized as sexual in origin. American Eugenics Society

Eugenics group formed in 1922 which changed it’s name to The Society for Biodemography and Social Biology in 1972 - possibly due to the name Eugenics which was practiced by the NAZIs in World War II when the exterminated anyone they deemed "undesirable".

*note of the current editor team two of them are from Brigham Young University, and the third is from the University of Utah - looks to be a Mormon run publication.
